Aaron Alexis

“This is a classic example of the failure of our mental health system – and the price we all pay for that failure,” said Doris A. Fuller, Treatment Advocacy Center executive director. “Aaron Alexis was clearly suffering an acute psychiatric crisis. He was like a man in the grip of a terrible heart attack. But because of our dysfunctional approach to mental illness treatment and weak civil commitment laws in the state where he was deteriorating, he wasn't treated like the victim of a severe medical emergency. Now, 13 people including Alexis are dead, eight more are injured, and the lives of innumerable others are forever changed.” Continue reading at the link above.

Criminalizing mental illness means that society reacts only AFTER an avoidable disaster. People suffering from acute psychosis must PROVE to be a danger to self and others. Too often, that proof comes in the form of violence. Then the sick person is more likely to be arrested than hospitalized. Nobody is helped by criminalizing mental illness except prison investors. Community safety suffers, sick people suffer, and taxpayers suffer. Sixty percent of mentally ill inmates are treated while incarcerated, meaning that taxpayers pay twice as much as they would have if the sick person had been treated before or instead of incarceration. Aaron Alexis's case seems to be an extreme result of society's laws barring involuntary commitment.

Another school of thought about the Navy Yard disaster is that Aaron Alexis was a "targeted individual" who really did hear voices as he claimed to police, and was under mind control. There are those who believe Alexis was used in a government PSYOPs operation to promote gun control. Read a report from FoxNews:

A Newport, Rhode Island police sergeant reported Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis to naval station police last month after the suspect told cops he was “hearing voices” through his hotel room wall and that three people were following him and sending vibrations into his body, according to a police report obtained by FoxNews.com.
